The festival became the basis of Hemingway’s first novel, The Sun Also Rises, that was published a year later. In 1925, Hemingway and his wife went to the famous Festival of San Fermin in Pamplona, Spain.Scott Fitzgerald,Įzra Pound, James Joyce, Juan Gris and Pablo Picasso. Hemingway met Gertrude Stein, who became his mentor and key to meeting great writers and artists including F.The couple moved to Paris after getting married. By 1920, he moved to Chicago where he met Hadley Richardson. At the age of 20, Hemingway worked as a freelance writer for the Toronto Star.Sadly, Agnes broke off the engagement and he returned to the United States. While staying at a hospital in Milan, he met nurse Agnes von Kurowsky, who accepted his marriage proposal.He received the Italian Silver Medal of Bravery after helping injured Italian soldiers. Before WWI ended, Hemingway served as an ambulance driver for the Red Cross in Italy.
Upon his graduation in 1917, Ernest worked as a cub journalist for the Kansas City Star.While in high school, Ernest worked as a sports writer for the school’s newspaper, The Trapeze and Tabula.He also participated in school athletics and music programs. Young Ernest attended Oak Park and River Forest High School where he excelled in English.He was the son of Clarence Edmonds Hemingway, a physician, and Grace Hall Hemingway, a musician. The juxtaposition of themes of death and suicide against camaraderie and sacrifice is of major importance in this novel, giving it a huge literary significance. For Whom the Bell Tolls explores themes of honor, death, duty, love, nature, camaraderie, innocence, war, modernity, salvation, the value of human life and man’s motivation. But it is also a love story between Robert and Maria, as well as an ode to Spain and Spanish culture (especially bullfighting), which Hemingway clearly loved. Robert Jordan is an experienced explosives expert in the International Brigade, fighting for republican guerillas against the fascists, and is assigned the task of destroying a strategically-important bridge before an attack on the city of Segovia. Hemingway’s greatest novel, For Whom the Bell Tolls, is another war-story about an American, Robert Jordan, and is again based on Hemingway’s real-life experiences during the Spanish Civil War, where he was a journalist and war reporter.
